Termites can do damage without you ever knowing it until the damage is done and it's too late and very expensive to mitigate. Termite damage is usually the result of years of infestation, so it's not a sudden event. Termites are constantly searching for food. In fact, a termite scout will travel about a football length a day in search of food! That’s a long way for a little bug. The frames of almost every home are made of wood, but termites eat anything that is made of cellulose. This can be cardboard, styrofoam, and paper-like on your sheetrock walls. Doesn’t my homeowners insurance cover termite damage? No: Termite damage is not included in homeowners insurance. Insurance companies see termite issues as inevitable for many homes, in which case they would lose more money than they make. This illustrates how prevalent this problem is for many families and their homes. Are termites really a problem in our area? Yes: Kentucky is a high area for termites. According to Termite Infestation Probability Zones (TIP Zones), Kentucky is located in TIP Zone #2 (moderate to heavy), which means the potential for termite damage is considered significant. The most common termite in Kentucky is the eastern subterranean termite, which can damage structural timbers in buildings. Termites can be a year-round concern in Kentucky because they can survive in temperatures of... - Published: 2023-12-15 - Modified: 2025-01-07 - URL: https://leitchfieldext.com/termite-myths/ TERMITE MYTHS VS. FACTS Termites are one of the most destructive and costly pests we see on a daily basis. Known as “silent destroyers,” termites will chew through wood, flooring and even wallpaper undetected. Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive species of termite as they eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By understanding what they are and what they aren't, you’ll be better able to spot an infestation before it gets out of control. This can help save your property from these invasive pests. https://leitchfieldext. com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/TERMITES-IN-ACTION. mp4 10 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT TERMITES: Myth #1 - Termite infestations are obvious. Termites are quiet invaders. By the time you notice tunnels in wood, exit holes and other telltale signs, your termite problem has probably already reached infestation proportions and resulted in structural damage. Termites take root in small cracks, crevices and other hard-to-spot places. Myth #2 - Properties previously treated for termites are safe forever. A single termite treatment won’t keep termites at bay indefinitely. Many homeowners assume that since their home has been treated once, it’s safe and they don’t need to worry about future problems. Some termite treatments have a one-year warranty with options to extend. However, environmental factors, products used around the house and the quality of work performed all influence the length of time the treatment is effective. Myth #3 - Termites aren’t a problem in the winter. Yes, most pests are more active in the spring and summer, but this rule doesn’t... - Published: 2023-10-15 - Modified: 2025-12-29 - URL: https://leitchfieldext.com/fall-invaders/ Dropping Temps Outside Drive Pests Inside With the change of season and the coming of Fall, homeowners around Central Kentucky might see signs of fall invaders -- pests that will look for warmer spaces to weather the winter. One of the many ways that insects survive cold weather is to hibernate inside structures. They migrate towards buildings in search of an ideal warm resting spot to spend the cold winter. Changes in daylight hours and cooler temperatures can trigger the insect’s indoor movements. Safe and sound inside your home, fall invader pests can cause infestations that last all winter long. Fall invader pests typically found in Central Kentucky: Ground Beetles Predaceous ground beetle (carabid) adults are elongate with a hard, shiny, upper surface. They have prominent, long legs and antennae. Most species are medium to large, about 1/8 to 1 inches (4–25 mm) long. Their color varies greatly, but many species are blackish or dark reddish. Black Field Cricket Field crickets are black or dark brown insects about 1 inch long as adults. They have large hind legs (for jumping) and most have well-developed wings. Nymphs are similar but are smaller and lack wings. Both have long, slender antennae. Brown Marmorated Stink Bug The brown marmorated stink bug is both an agricultural and structural pest. It can be identified by its mottled brown color and shield-like shape. Adults are about 5/8-inch in length and have lighter bands or stripes on the last segments of the antennae and around the exposed... - Published: 2021-08-03 - Modified: 2025-04-17 - URL: https://leitchfieldext.com/mosquito-control/ While there are a few things you can do to keep mosquitoes away, the best and most effective way is to schedule an appointment with your professional, experienced mosquito experts at Leitchfield Exterminating, Inc. It is very important for a real estate property to pass pest inspection because this will determine if loaning companies will lend the buyer money. Lending companies normally require an inspection done by a pest control expert before an agreement can be made. Normally, checking for termites is done by a licensed technician. This expert will be able to accurately tell if a home is indeed infested with termites, or if the problem is caused by other organisms present in the house. The inspection covers the entire home from top to bottom and may take up to an hour to complete. However, the length of time may still vary upon the size of the house and the existence of any clutter or debris. Inspections are an essential aspect of the pest control process. An inspection confirms if a property has an infestation and what the appropriate next steps may be. We guarantee a professional, thorough inspection, looking for any type of evidence of previous or existing activity. We can provide this service for you or at the request of your real estate agent.
